1. saṁhatiḥ çreyase sthemne bhidā vidhvaṁsakārinī ,
United we stand; divided we fall.
2. patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ ,
atyārūḍhirbhavati mahatāmapyapabhraṁçaniṣṭhā ,
All rise must end in a fall.
3. atidarpe hatā lañkā ,
Pride goeth before a fall.
4. upakāraḥ pratyupakāreṇa niryātayitanyaḥ ,
One good turn deserves other.
5. atiparicayādavajñā bhavati ,
lokaḥ prayāgavāsī kūpe snānaṁ samācarati ,
Familiarity breeds contempt.
6. hitāhitaṁ vikṣya nikāmamācaret ,
Look before you leap.
7. avivekaḥ paramāpadāṁ padam ,
Indiscretion is the greatest cause of misery.

If the sky falls, we shall catch larks.
19. bhakṣitepi laçune na çānto vyādhiḥ ,
kṛtaçca çīlavibhraṁçaḥ na cānañgaḥ çamaṁ gataḥ ,
Even the commission of the sin has not brought me nearer the fulfillment of my object.
20. yācako yācakaṁ ddaṣṭvā çvanavad dhurdhurāyate ,
Two of a trade seldom agree.
21. api dhanvantaritvaidyaḥ kiṁ karotu gatāyuṣi ,
There is no remedy against death.
22. ito bhraṣṭastato naṣṭaḥ ,
vṛaçcikaviṣabhītaḥ sarpeṇa daṣṭaḥ ,

A weakling, howsoever try he may, cannot injure the strong.
41. na biḍālo bhavedyatra tatra krīḍanti mūṣakāḥ ,
When the cat is away, the mice will play.
42. bruvate hi phalena sādhave na tu kaṇṭena nijopayogitām ,
Good men prove their usefulness by deeds and not by words.
43. anuktamapyūhati paṇḍito janaḥ ,
The wise make out even what is implicit.
44. svabhāvo duratikramaḥ ,
You cannot go against your nature.
45. na ramyamāhāryamapekṣate guṇam ,
Beauty requires no paint.
46. sahasā vidadhīta na kriyām ,
One should not act precipitately.
47. sāhase çrīḥ prativasati ,
anirvedaprāpyāṇI çreyāṁsi ,
The brave win the fair. Nothing venture, nothing gain.
48. sa suhṛad vyasane yaḥ spāt ,
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
49. skhalanadharmāṇo manuṣyāḥ ,
To err is human.
50. kimiṣṭamannaṁ kharasukarṇām ,
ravropahāraiḥ kimu markaṭānām ,

51. saṁçayātmā vinaçyati ,
There is no future for the sceptic.
52. sādhukārī sādhurbhavati ,
Noble is he who nobly acts.
53. çaṭhe çāvthaṁ samācaret ,

na kupakhananaṁ yuktaṁ pradīpte vahninā gṛhe ,
While the grass grows, the horse starves.
55. indropi laghutāṁ yāti svayaṁ prakhyāpitairguṇaiḥ ,
Self-praise is derogatory.
56. svaguṇāviṣkriyādoṣo nāsti bhrūtārthaçaṁsinaḥ ,
A person stating facts does not offend by recounting his own merits.
57. khalaḥ sarṣapamātrāṇī paracchidrāṇī paçyati ,
ātmano bilvamātrāṇī paçyati ,,
The mote thou seest in the eyes of others, but bot the beam in thine own.
58. āmukhāpāti kalyāṇāṁ kāryasidbhiṁ hi çaṁsati ,
Morning shows the day.
59. sānuṣañgāṇī kalyāṇāni ,
Good fortunes come in a train.
60. vipad vipadamanubadhnāti ,
sañḍhacāriṇo ‘narthāḥ ,
Misfortunes come by shoals.
61. payopi çaiṇḍikīhaste vāruṇātyuabhidhīyate ,
Evil breeds suspicion.
62. kiṁ kālo na kavalayati ,
Who can escape death?
63. satyameva jayate nānṛtam ,
Truth triumphs and not falsehood.
64. gaveṣate kelivanaṁ praviṣṭaḥ kramelakaḥ kaṇṭakajālameva ,
The evil-minded have an eye for fault only.
65. nahi bandhyā vijānāti gurvīṁ prasavavedanāṁ ,
An idler has no idea of others’ labour.
66. saṁhatiḥ kāryasādhikā ,
Union is effective.
67. niḥsārasya padārthasya prāyeṇāḍamvraro mahān ,
Much cry and little wool.
68. añgīkṛtaṁ sukṛtinaḥ paripālayanti ,
The virtuous abide by their undertakings.
69. āmrān pṛṣṭaḥ kovidārānācaṣṭe ,
Is questioned one thing and replies another.
70. tattvāvabodhaikaraso na tarkaḥ ,
Reason does not essentially lead to the knowledge of reality.
71. sāmānādhikaraṇyaṁ hi tejastimirayoḥ kutaḥ ,
How much can darkness and the sunshine co-exist?
72. sarvanāçe samutpanne ardhaṁ tyajati paṇḍitaḥ ,

73. nahi prabhadati paravattā kartumātmapriyāṇī ,
